Florian Ross 8Ball
After being chosen by the jury for the German Jazz Meeting in 2006 this year’s renewed nomination of pianist/composer Florian Ross is confirmation of the fact that he not only continues to be one of the currently most important musicians in the German scene but also that he regularly has exciting new productions to offer. In addition to a “classic” piano trio his new project 8Ball includes the complete saxophone line-up of a big band but no brass instruments – very individual.
Musicians: Florian Ross (piano, fender rhodes), Dietmar Fuhr (bass), Jonas Burgwinkel (drums), Frank Vaganée (alto, soprano, alto flute), Felix Wahnschaffe (alto, soprano), Jasper Blom (tenor, clarinet), Wolfgang Fuhr (tenor, clarinet), Nils Klein (baritone, bass-clarinet)

Carsten Daerr Trio
Carsten Daerr moves freely within the different musical genres and his playful handling of New Music, Pop and Standards results in his own (individual) style. Together with Oliver Potratz and Eric Schaefer he collapses the boundaries between composition and improvisation to allow maximum scope for their ideas. His aim is to tell stories, either with or without words.

Sebastian Gramss UNDERKARL
Underkarl exists since 1996. The spectrum of activities pursued by the bassist Sebastian Gramss extends from very individual versions of jazz standards in “20th Century Jazz Cover”, through film and radio play music, to his equally idiosyncratic vision of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The outstanding soloists that make up the band include the trombone player Nils Wogram who caused a sensation at the first German Jazz Meeting two years ago.
Muicians: Sebastian Gramss (bass), Lömsch Lehmann (tenor), Nils Wogram (trombone), Frank Wingold (guitar), Dirk Peter Kölsch (drums)

Laia Genc LiaisonTonique
Whilst a lot of Cologne musicians feel drawn to Berlin, Laia Genc went the other way: the Berlin pianist chose to live in Cologne where she became a student of John Taylor. Together with Mathias Nowak on bass and Nils Tegen on drums she creates her very own liaison tonique. In addition to several national prizes in Leipzig and Cologne Genc has already been awarded international prizes, too – for example the soloist prize at the “Jazz À La Defense” in Paris, and she was also the winner of the jazz category at the “Torneo Internationale Della Musica” in Rome.

CYMINOLOGY
The music of Cyminology is proof of the fact that interculturalism has long been an everyday phenomenon. It is thus not surprising that this multinational band – Cymin comes from Iran, Ralf Schwarz (bass) from Germany, Benedikt Jahnel (piano) was born in France and Ketan Bhatti (drums) in India – came together in a city in which intercultural music reflects everyday life in a multinational environment: Berlin.
Cymin enchants listeners with rhythmically accentuated and very emotionally sung Persian lyrics. Sometimes impelling, sometimes slightly melancholy, the music exudes an aura that it is almost impossible to escape.

Matthias Schriefl SHREEFPUNK
A lot can be said about Matthias Schriefl and his project Shreefpunk but one thing is certain: it’s damn good! The 25 year old trumpet player Matthias Schriefl from Allgäu (Germany) has a sharp wit and is notorious for crossing the borders into modern classical music. But that’s not all: rough edges and romantic whims fit together perfectly in the richly varied sounds of his compositions. The musical texture changes constantly and listeners never know what to expect around the next corner. Matthias Schriefl is one of those young musicians who reflect their hybrid musical socialisation in their own individual sounds.
Musicians: Matthias Schriefl (trumpet, flugelhorn), Johannes Behr (guitar), Robert Landfermann (bass), Jens Düppe (drums)
